Thermal 101 — Key Terms Explained
Gimbal-stabilized vs fixed-mount?
A gimbal actively stabilizes the thermal image during flight — the feed stays smooth even in wind, and you can steer it. A fixed-mount camera is bolted to the airframe (usually nadir-pointing) — lighter, cheaper, and ideal for mapping passes where you don't need to steer.
What is thermal fusion?
Dual-sensor payloads pair a visible-light RGB camera with a thermal sensor and overlay the two — picture-in-picture or blended. You see the recognizable visible scene with heat highlighted on top. Essential for evidence-grade capture and for navigating to a thermal target.
What resolution do I need for aerial work?
Higher resolution means a wider ground swath per pass — fewer flight lines to cover the same area. For agriculture and mapping, 640 is worth the premium. For close-range inspection (power lines, bridges), 384 is sufficient since you're flying closer to the target.
What is NDAA compliance?
Section 889 of the NDAA prohibits U.S. government agencies (and contractors) from using telecom/video-surveillance equipment from covered Chinese manufacturers. If you fly for a government-funded project, you need an NDAA-compliant payload. We flag compliant SKUs with a shield badge.
