Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference — the smallest temperature change a thermal sensor can distinguish. Lower mK = better contrast in rain, fog, or high humidity. A sub-40 mK sensor will pick out animals that a 60 mK sensor misses entirely.

Higher resolution means more pixels on the detector — more detail at distance, but also higher cost and slightly more image processing lag. 384 is the sweet spot for most hunters; 640 is worth it for long-range hog depredation where you need to separate animals from background heat at 300+ yards.

If you shoot past 150 yards, yes. Thermal reticles don't magnify like optical scopes, so range estimation by eye is unreliable. An LRF gives you the exact distance for precise holdover — the difference between a clean kill and a miss on a running sounder.

A clip-on sits in front of your existing day scope — you keep your trusted reticle and eye relief, and snap it on/off without re-zeroing. A dedicated thermal scope is lighter and purpose-built but means swapping optics between day and night. If you hunt both, clip-on; if you hunt mostly after dark, dedicated.
