Thermal optics selection FAQ
NETD (noise equivalent temperature difference) is the thermal sensitivity of the sensor, measured in millikelvin (mK): it tells you the smallest temperature difference the optic can resolve. The lower the number, the cleaner the image, because the sensor separates a warm body from cooler ground with less noise. Under 40 mK is good, under 25 mK is excellent, and a low NETD is what keeps an image usable on humid nights, in fog, and through light cover when contrast is poor.
