A radiometric JPEG stores a temperature value for every pixel — not just a color. This means you can open the image later in analysis software and measure the exact temperature of any point, draw regions, and trend data over time. Non-radiometric cameras only give you a visual heat map.

For most inspections, sensitivity (NETD) matters more than resolution. A 320×240 sensor with sub-50 mK NETD will find more faults than a 640×480 with 80 mK. Higher resolution helps for wide-area building surveys; higher sensitivity helps for finding subtle electrical or mechanical hot spots.

Handheld cameras are for walk-around inspection — you bring the camera to the equipment. Fixed-mount cameras are permanently installed for continuous condition monitoring of critical assets (switchgear, motors, process lines) and stream data to your CMMS with alarm thresholds.

Emissivity is how efficiently a surface emits infrared energy. Shiny metal reads artificially cold; matte surfaces read accurately. Set the emissivity for each material you scan — a wrong value skews every temperature reading. Most cameras let you adjust per-spot or per-region.
