Thermal Drones for Power Lines and Substations
Every electrical failure starts as heat. A loose splice, a corroded clamp, a bushing breaking down under load — each one runs warmer than it should long before it fails, and a thermal payload reads that difference in a single pass instead of a six-mile walk with a handheld camera. What you are buying is a radiometric payload on a stable aircraft. The sensor has to record actual degrees so a crew can compare a joint against ambient and against last quarter's scan, it needs enough resolution and optical zoom to read a clamp from outside the minimum approach distance, and it needs a 3-axis gimbal so wind does not turn a readable image into a smear. Endurance decides how much of a feeder one battery covers, and whether you fly it yourself or let a docked aircraft run the patrol on a schedule.

3 picksAutel Alpha with L35T Gimbal Utility Inspection Package
$21,603
Airframe and L35T gimbal with radiometric thermal and zoom in one inspection package, for crews that want a single purchase order before the season starts.
DJI Matrice 4TD
$7,499
Integrated radiometric thermal and zoom in a compact airframe that fits a truck bed, so a line patrol does not need a second payload case.
DJI Zenmuse H30T
$11,999
Thermal, wide-angle and a laser rangefinder on one gimbal for Matrice 350 / 400-class aircraft; the rangefinder pins the distance to a target from standoff.
What this mission demands
Radiometric, not just thermal
A defect is a temperature difference. Radiometric capture records the degrees behind the bright spot, so a splice can be compared with ambient and with the same joint on the previous patrol.
Resolution and zoom at standoff
Crews fly outside the utility's minimum approach distances and zoom in. Pairs a 640-class detector with optical zoom to read a clamp or a bushing from 40 to 60 feet away.
A gimbal that holds a target
Every degree of zoom magnifies movement as much as detail. A stabilized gimbal keeps a small target readable while the aircraft holds position in wind.
Flight time per span set
Endurance decides how many structures one battery covers. A docked aircraft removes the drive to the substation entirely for repeat patrols.

Questions buyers ask
A 640-class radiometric detector with optical zoom is the working standard: it reads a clamp or splice from outside the approach distance. A 384-class payload works for close, low-altitude work but loses detail fast as standoff grows.
