Thermal Drones for Oil, Gas and Emissions Work
A refinery or tank farm is a heat map. Product levels, tank roof condition, flare behaviour, steam traps and process piping all read differently by temperature, and a drone covers in twenty minutes what an operator walks in an afternoon. One distinction matters before anything else. Radiometric thermal cameras — which is what most drone payloads are — find heat anomalies: a hot bearing, a cold tank roof seam, an abnormal flare. Imaging a specific gas plume (methane or VOC) needs a dedicated optical gas imaging payload with a cooled mid-wave sensor tuned to that gas. If emissions work is the goal, say so when you ask, because the payload changes the whole system.

Know which sensor the job needs
Radiometric thermal finds heat anomalies on equipment. Gas imaging needs a cooled OGI payload tuned to the gas. Buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this mission.
Standoff and zoom
Process areas have exclusion zones and hot surfaces. A zoomed payload lets a crew read a flange or a tank seam from outside the area rather than over it.
Documentation that survives audit
A recorded temperature, an asset tag and a timestamp turn an image into an inspection record a regulator or an insurer will accept.
Route efficiency
Pipelines and tank farms are large. Plan endurance and waypoint routes so a single crew covers the route in one shift rather than returning to swap batteries.
